CAREER COUNSELING & RÉSUMÉ WRITING

Public Libraries

Most libraries offer FREE one-on-one career counseling and resume assistance so it is best to start within their own library district.  If you have a library card, you can also utilize the e-Classes (Universal Classes) available online to refresh computer skills and more.  You can also use Mango to learn foreign language.  Inquire within your local public library for appointments and specific information on classes.  Check libraries for job fairs as well.

The Department of Labor

The Department of Labor has two One-Stop Career Centers: One in Patchogue and one in Hauppauge.  This link for the Department of Labor has many other programs available for job seekers.

http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/departments/labor.aspx

Each of the employment centers requires a one-hour seminar before anyone can register for workshops. Seminars are offered daily, Monday through Friday.  During these sessions they will give a tour of the facility and explain all of the options individuals have, including retraining, if needed, additional education, information for those with disabilities, etc.  Once completed, individuals can register for workshops on résumé’ preparation, cover letter, use of social media, job search, etc.  Online computer training is offered with certificate upon completion, (all done on computer).  For Hauppague, individuals must register in person for workshops; for Patchogue, this can be done by phone.

There are job listings in the office, faxing, phone banks available - all free of charge.  Job fairs take place on the premises and a calendar is available each month with listings (some can be obtained over the internet).
